FA team visited Child Foundation of India at Visakhapatnam

Dear Friends,

Our team visited the organization: ‘Child Foundation of India’ on 11th Aug,2012.

FA gathered the below information:
ü  The organization is being ran by Mr. K. Surya Rao (a Doctor) from the past 22 years in Visakhapatnam and is taking care of street children
ü  Achieved an National Award in the year 2000 from the Government as the street children are being turned as engineers and doctors etc.
ü  Currently, 82 students are being taken care by the organization. The students are provided with the facilities like School(1st to 5th standard), hostel, food, water and with electricity supply (to Fans, Lights and Television).
ü  Around 70 thousand rupees being spent by the organization per month to provide the facilities to the 82 children and to pay the warden(Name: Ratnam).
ü  The foundation is running a school from 1st standard to 5th standard with children divided into 3 class rooms(due to lack of faculty). The students of 2nd and 3rd  standards are combined and are seated in a single class room. The students of 4th and 5th standards are combined and are seated in single class room. And this is apart from the 1st standard students.
ü  Special case of many students with an example: When a street child is joined in the foundation, he might be of the age 10 yrs. Even though the student doesn’t know alphabets, the student will be placed in 5th standard as per his age limit. Such students will be seated on one bench in the class room and are taught alphabets along with other students who are studying 5th standard.
ü  Even though the foundation is taking care of 82 children, the foundation is not in a position to spend amount on providing faculty to the school. Even the 2 teachers who are teaching the students in the school on regular basis are being sponsored with the salaries by the outsiders.
ü  Currently, some of the trainers who are being trained in BHPV are teaching the students in the evenings for an hr or 2 hrs on regular basis.
ü  All the students are having the note books and text books currently.

Requests to our FA team by the warden:
ü  As there are already 2 regular teaching staff and trainers from BHPV teaching the students in the evenings, the students are being confused as there are multiple teachers for them for each subject. So, they are expecting only one faculty for each student.
ü  And teaching the students in the weekends doesn’t meet the requirements with a flow in the regular subjects. So, they are expecting for a faculty on regular basis.
ü  As we are interested to teach in the weekends, we are requested to teach the topics other than regular subjects like Yoga, Ramayana, Mahabharata, General Knowledge etc

Actions and Options available with FA:
1)    Providing employment to a faculty to teach on regular basis:
Ø  The warden informed us that there is a girl (who studied intermediate) approaching the school regularly requesting to provide employment as a faculty to the students. As there is no sponsor to sponsor the salary for the teacher, the warden have been rejecting her from a few weeks.
Ø  1500 rupees per month is the pay to the faculty who work on regular basis in the school. This is decided by the foundation as per the salaries being provided to other faculty.
Ø  FA is ready to provide employment to the girl suggested by the warden as a faculty on regular basis in the school and sponsor the pay of 1500 rupees per month.
Ø  As the organization: ‘Child Foundation of India’ is government registered, the organization provides us an official letter mentioning that we are sponsoring the pay to the faculty of their foundation.

2)    As we have a strength of 49 interested members to teach the students:
Ø  We can plan for teaching General Knowledge, teaching Ramayana and Mahabharata, teaching the life history of Vivekananda etc in the weekends.
Ø  We can even plan for teaching: drawing, encouraging the students in sports etc.

3)    As per the suggestion from one of our friends in our team:
Ø  Better to buy a small projector. Even, we can look if anyone can come forward and sponsor the projector.
Ø  We can make use of the projector to project video tutorials using CD’s or DVD’s to the students. This idea can be implemented to all the students across all the government schools.
Ø  We can even make use of the projector for giving seminars to the students in various colleges or schools.
Ø  We can even make use of the projector for organizing the social awareness drives in public.

We planned for a team meeting in Visakhapatnam on 14th Aug,2012 for the final decisions on the above mentioned actions and options available with FA.

Thanks & Regards,
Friends Association
